Ballarat trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy are hopeful that Bossy Nic’s preference for straight track racing will help her secure a victory at Flemington this Saturday.

Fresh off a win at Flemington, Bossy Nic returns to contest the VOBIS Gold Comet (1000m), a race restricted to VOBIS Gold qualified horses. Nine runners are set to compete in the $175,000 event, with the winner receiving $96,250 in prize money and an additional $23,000 owner’s bonus for qualified horses.

“We’re going for the big money, the VOBIS money, and she’s very well and loves the straight,” Tony McEvoy said.

Bossy Nic has had a steady campaign, starting at Ballarat in December, with Saturday’s race being her sixth run this preparation. After a placing at Flemington in January, she raced in Group 3 company at Sandown but finished tenth to Group 1 Oakleigh Plate runner-up She’s Bulletproof on February 1.

Appreciating a drop in grade, Bossy Nic comfortably won over 1200m at Flemington on February 15. McEvoy acknowledged the risk of dropping back to 1000m but emphasized the lucrative prize money on offer.

“She’s back to 1000m, which is a bit of a risk, but this is a restricted race, so it shouldn’t be too strong,” McEvoy explained.

Beau Mertens, who rode Bossy Nic to her recent win, will again partner with her on Saturday.
