Boasting a last start win over the top two fancies in Magic Millions Classic betting, Fire Lane has the right form reference for the $2 million feature.

Now trainer Brad Widdup is just hoping she has coped with the five-day delay to the race.

“It’s a bit of an unknown now, isn’t it?” Widdup said.

“Everything is good with her. She is there fit and well and healthy, it has just been a bit prolonged.

“But everyone is in the same boat.

“She is in good order and she just has to turn up and race well.”

Fire Lane ($21) has made an outstanding start to her career, winning the Max Lees Classic (900m) on debut in November then finishing fourth in the Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic (1100m) on December 14.

She backed up 10 days later with a strong Randwick victory where she claimed the scalps of Platinum Jubilee and Empire Of Japan, the respective winners of the Gimcrack Stakes and Breeders’ Plate who are second favourite and favourite for Thursday’s showpiece race.

The Magic Millions card was moved to the midweek time slot after being called off after two races on Saturday due to unsafe track conditions with an errant sprinkler thought to be at least partly to blame.

The Gold Coast track remained in the heavy range on Wednesday and while Fire Lane is untested on anything worse than good, Widdup is hoping the wet conditions might negate her awkward barrier draw.

The youngster will jump from gate 12 if the three remaining emergencies don’t run and Jay Ford, who has partnered her in all three career starts, retains the ride.

“If it is a bit wet, it might be the place to be,” Widdup said.

“There looks to be good speed, so hopefully she can slot in behind something that will take her into the race.

“Jay does a lot of riding for me. He knows the filly and he’s very confident in her, which is always a good thing.”
