The prospect of securing yet another Group One victory on home soil has encouraged the team behind Campione D’italia to target the concluding part of the two-year-old triple crown and pursue a second elite win in the Champagne Stakes at Randwick.
This colt is set to attempt replicating the route taken by stable companion Militarize three years prior, aiming to achieve the Sires’ Produce Stakes-Champagne Stakes double, with trainer Chris Waller explaining that it is logical to offer him another opportunity at a Sydney Group One while he is in top condition and facing rivals on equal terms.
“Group Ones are so hard to win, and when you’re in good form and there’s a Group One race just for two-year-olds in your backyard, (it’s hard to ignore),” Waller said.
“When he returns, he will have a Group One penalty in The Run To The Rose. We’ve got a few up-and-comers coming through, and you don’t know where you draw.
Then you’ve got to go to the Caulfield Guineas and travel first time around Caulfield.
There are a lot of unknowns, whereas he’s here.”
Campione D’italia has enjoyed an outstanding campaign as a juvenile, taking out the Skyline Stakes (1200m) on his second outing and powering home late for a strong fourth in the Golden Slipper (1200m), prior to his success in the Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
Sired by the star sire Snitzel, the colt is the standout in a line-up of 13 for the Champagne Stakes (1600m) and has secured a favourable draw in gate four with top jockey James McDonald aboard.
Joining the colt from the stable are Fireball (gate two) and Diameter, victor of Saturday’s Fernhill Mile (gate eight), while Miss Chanel, who finished second in the Sires’ Produce Stakes, is one of four fillies in the field, alongside Grinzinger Heart and Salann prepared by Ben Brisbourne.
Six fillies have triumphed in the Champagne Stakes over the last 20 years, with She’s Extreme the latest in 2022.
