Cartwright aiming for breakthrough Stakes win in Hareeba Stakes

Apprentice jockey Luke Cartwright is thrilled about his first Stakes race ride, hoping to land a win in the Hareeba Stakes at Mornington.

Following his first Saturday metropolitan win at Bendigo last week, which turned into a double, Cartwright will partner Curran in the 1200m Listed race on Saturday’s Mornington Cup program. Curran is trained by Cartwright’s grandmother Lyn Tolson and mother Leonie Proctor, with whom Cartwright has had significant success, including seven of his 57 career wins.

“Getting a result for them would mean the world to me,” Cartwright said.

He also noted that a win in the Hareeba Stakes would hold special significance for his grandmother, who worked with Hareeba during his time as a leading sprinter.

Cartwright will be riding Curran for the first time in a race. The five-time winner has earned nearly $900,000 in prize money. Cartwright is confident Curran can run well, provided he gets the right run and breathes cleanly.

“He usually runs well this time of year, and if there’s a bit of rain, he’ll appreciate that a lot more,” Cartwright said.
