Bunbury trainer Michael Lane trusts his decision to target the $1.5 million Furphy Railway Stakes with Resortman will prove the right call at Ascot on Saturday.
Michael Lane had been aiming Resortman at the G3 Gold Rush (1400m) in December, but elected to change his plans and set the resilient gelding for Perth’s prized G1 mile race instead.
Helping sway Lane’s opinion was ace jockey Chris Parnham who sat aboard Resortman last-start in the Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) when he attacked the line strongly for third.
“Chris thought the Railway best suited him,” Lane told Tabradio.
“He’s settling better and thinks he will get a mile; he’s bred to get a mile.
“And I think the other races are only going to get stronger than this one.
“That’s what turned me and also his last start where he settled really good.”
Lane, a winner of 12 black-type races, is optimistic he can claim his first G1 success with Resortman in the Railway Stakes.
“He’s going super and to be honest, in my opinion, the field is an honest field, but there are no real standouts,” Lane said.
“There are a number of horses who can win it and I can see no reason why we can’t win it.”
Resortman carries the 57kg top weight and has dawn barrier one for Brad Rawiller.
The former jockey has the perfect record on Resortman after combining with the six-year-old to win the Idyllic Prince Stakes (1300m) and the Eurhythmic Stakes (1400m).
Rawiller takes over from Parnham who partners the current $4 favourite, Alaskan God .
“I was rapt that he drew the inside,” Lane said.
“I’m very lucky to have Brad back aboard.
“Chris is on the favourite, who looks a very smart horse.
“Brad knows the horse well, is a super rider and is really excited about Saturday.
“I’m really happy to have barrier one and it’s great for Brad, makes it easier, I reckon.”
Lane admits Resortman’s path to the 2022 Railway Stakes has been a pleasant, but welcome surprise.
The son of Helmet resumed from a leg injury in July and has won four feature races this campaign.
Bought for $15,000 as a weanling, Lane said he’s proud to have Resortman involved in one of the state’s most esteemed races.
“It means a great deal and it’s what you train for,” Lane said.
“We haven’t had much chances to get there.
“It means a lot to me, our stable and owners.
“It’s great to have a horse in a G1 race at this level.
“It means a hell of a lot.”
In current Tabtouch markets, Resortman is rated a $18 chance.
