Chidiac secures stakes win for rural trainer

Two jockeys in blue race silks ride two thoroughbreds neck-and-neck on a grassy track near the finish line, green saddle cloth visible with number 11.

Chidiac, victor of the Country Championships Final, has smoothly moved into stakes company by clinching a tight yet resolute win in the Group Three Hawkesbury Crown.

Her success handed emerging jockey Braith Nock his 300th career victory and a quick brace on the standalone meeting following his earlier win on Bella Khadijah in the Midway Handicap (1500m).

Bred by retail mogul Gerry Harvey, Chidiac is amassing a strong resume with seven triumphs from 12 outings, though her achievement on Saturday stands out as potentially the most significant due to the enhancement of her market worth.

“This was stepping over the line for me (Group race) as I like to keep them graded,” winning trainer Brett Cavanough said.

“But with mares, you have to step them out of their zone for black type, and now she has got the job done she is very valuable.

“She was worth $25,000 when I got her, but Gerry will probably discount her for $1 million now.”

Cavanough, operating alongside his daughter Georgie, was just as delighted to deliver Nock a personal landmark.

Last year’s top Sydney apprentice, Nock tops the current standings with 25 metropolitan successes and appropriately notched his 300th total win for his Scone trainer.

“I had that in mind all the time, I wanted to give him his 300th winner,” Cavanough said.

“It’s a great result for Braith, the stable, our staff. Everyone involved.”

Cavanough remains uncertain about Chidiac’s future plans but indicated he might consider the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone in two weeks.

“But it is job done for the time being. We will see how she pulls up and go from there,” he said.

“The Dark Jewel is 1400 metres, and she gets that, so a bit to think about.”

Chidiac at $4.80 edged out Surfin’ Bird ($5) in a blanket finish with pacesetter Arriving Home ($20) grabbing third place.
