Charlotte Littlefield is eager for her promising filly Concord Connie to deliver another impressive effort before she lets her ambitions grow larger.
Concord Connie delivered an outstanding display to claim victory at her third outing at Flemington on Anzac Day, securing a six-length triumph in fast time.
The filly is back at Flemington this Saturday to face the colts and geldings in the K A Morrison Handicap (1400m).
“We’re just trying to keep a lid on her at the moment and not get ahead of ourselves,” Littlefield said.
“She has to back-up that performance before we start jumping up and down, but she’s in really good order.
“She’s doing everything you want to see, she’s ticked all the boxes, and we’ve got to get through one more day.”
The recent Flemington success marked Concord Connie’s second victory this preparation, and Littlefield indicated the intention is to avoid pushing too hard this campaign.
A workout at Pakenham on Tuesday confirmed to the trainer that the three-year-old remains in excellent condition, coming after a track gallop the previous week.
“She’s a naturally athletic, fit and a gifted horse aerobically,” Littlefield said.
“I can’t fault the horse, and we’ll see how she goes on Saturday.”
Littlefield has handled expectations previously with She’s Bulletproof, who achieved a Group 1 placing before retirement, and noted she isn’t under that level of scrutiny yet with Concord Connie.
However, she recognizes the attention is building following the filly’s latest success, and a strong result on Saturday could elevate expectations further.
“We haven’t gone to lofty heights, we’re in a handicap for three-year-olds,” Littlefield said.
“We haven’t gone too high and this might be her last run before she heads to the paddock with spring aims.
“She’s a filly that is still quite fragile at times, quite sensitive and I think doing too much at this time will be detrimental to her future.”
