Double chance for Les Kelly at Doomben

Comeback trainer Les Kelly has a good chance for his first Saturday metropolitan double since his return to racing when two-year-olds Snapchat Girl and Calligrapher step out at Doomben.

Snapchat Girl is in the H G Mumm Hcp (1600m) and Calligrapher the Tattersall’s Two-Year-Old (1050m).

The pair gave Kelly a midweek double against older horses at the Gold Coast three weeks ago and Snapchat Girl has since won a good quality juvenile race at the Grafton carnival.

Kelly took 18 months off from racing and returned to training at Ascot Lodge at the Gold Coast about 12 months ago with Snapchat Girl’s owners, the Cowell family, as his major backers.

Snapchat Girl has been impressive in her two recent wins, claiming an open maiden by 5-1/4 lengths and the Grafton race by two lengths.

Calligrapher was formerly trained in Sydney by Peter and Paul Snowden and won a 1000m-maiden at Gosford at his second start after which he was sold to a client of Kelly.

“We gelded him after his first start and that seems to have made the difference,” Kelly said.

Connections had been reluctant to geld Calligrapher because he was a colt by sire -of the-moment Written Tycoon but the decision now looks likely to pay off.

Ryan Plumb, who has been doing much of the stable riding, will replace Jason Taylor who is riding at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
