Draw is key for Lockwood’s filly Extreme Taste

Barry Lockwood initially suggested that there wasn’t much to report on his filly Extreme Taste “because she hasn’t won yet,” but with a bit more encouragement, he’s much more optimistic about her prospects of breaking her maiden status at Ipswich on Wednesday.

A three-start maiden, Extreme Taste will contest the Ipswich Party Hire Fillies and Mares Maiden (1200m) second-up this preparation from barrier nine. She finished third at Doomben in maiden company over 1110m on May 24.

“The only thing that will stop her is the wide gate,” Lockwood stated. “She’s ready to win but just needs a bit of luck and I think it was a bit of pilot error as the rider gave away the run to the winner. Going four-deep on the corner and staying there didn’t help. She did a lot of work and the wider the rail is and the wider you are, the worse it gets.”

Extreme Taste is currently the $2.80 favourite for the event, with two-kilo claiming apprentice Benjamin Osmond set to ride, replacing Damien Boche who is sidelined after a fall at Gold Coast.

“If she gets a nice run from the barrier, she’ll be very hard to beat,” veteran trainer Lockwood added. His training partnership with Emma-Jane Vincent was formalised late last year, a move he’s clearly enjoying.

The filly, by Extreme Choice and out of the American-bred mare Leamington, has a strong pedigree, with five of her seven siblings having been multiple winners.
