Joe Pride remains puzzled over Estadio Mestalla receiving two kilos more than a Group 1 victor in the Luskin Star Stakes, yet he is confident the reliable gelding will put forth maximum effort.
The seven-year-old achieved his biggest success in last year’s Listed Winter Stakes (1100m) and carries 61kg in Saturday’s key Scone event, whereas 2025 Randwick Guineas victor Linebacker, who also secured the Group 3 Silver Eagle (1300m) during spring, gets 59kg.
“Explain that one to me,” Pride quipped.
“He is curiously weighted.”
This gelding has demonstrated skill in handling big weights, winning with 63kg at Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day and finishing placed under 61kg in the December Summer Cup (2000m).
Pride notes that Estadio Mestalla’s robust build aids in managing heavy burdens, though it’s not solely due to size.
“I have also had some good small horses able to do it,” Pride said.
“He’s a very well-balanced horse, and quality helps them carry weight. If they’re not good, they can’t carry it against anyone.”
Setting handicaps aside, Pride anticipates a solid showing from Estadio Mestalla after his near-miss sixth in the Hawkesbury Gold Rush (1100m), marking his return post-summer.
Although Saturday’s Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) serves as preparation toward the gelding’s primary target—the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane next month—Pride views it as a contest his runner can take.
“He will peak third-up, but he will run very well at Scone,” he said.
“The Stradbroke is his goal.”
Previous Scone feature victors include top performers like Osborne Bulls (2018), later third in The Everest and a multiple Group 1 placer; Trekking, who notched the 2019 Luskin Star Stakes-Stradbroke Handicap combo and Everest place; plus speedster Lost And Running (2021).
