Fangirl claims Group 1 victory in Queen Of The Turf Stakes

Chris Waller’s decision to run Fangirl in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes instead of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes was rewarded with a Group 1 victory on Saturday.

While Waller won the $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes with Via Sistina, Fangirl triumphed in the Queen Of The Turf, clocking her fourth career Group 1 win.

Fangirl, a short-priced favourite, came from the back of the field to win under James McDonald, marking her first Group 1 win since the King Charles III Stakes last spring.

Waller praised Fangirl’s consistency across seasons, noting, “Each preparation she just stands up and she’s counted.”

McDonald, who also rode Via Sistina to victory earlier, highlighted Fangirl’s performance after dropping back to fillies and mares grade, “She’s a great mare. I love her to bits,” he said.

Fangirl ($1.60) won by three-quarters of a length over Stefi Magnetica ($6.50), with Atishu ($9.50) third in what was Atishu’s final race before heading to the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in May.
