Fangirl is favoured to make amends in the George Ryder Stakes after a remarkable recovery from a life-threatening injury.
The mare contested the 2023 edition of the race but finished second behind Anamoe at the peak of his powers. This year, she was expected to go one better before a stable accident almost ended her career.
“She was in a bad way last year, so to have her back racing and winning is pretty special,” trainer Chris Waller said. “She wasn’t beaten far by Anamoe two years ago and is a stronger version now. I think she’s ready to peak.”
Despite suffering a serious leg injury, Fangirl has returned to form, winning the 7 Stakes (1600m) and the Apollo Stakes (1400m), where she defeated Via Sistina. She also finished second in the Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m).
Waller reports she’s improved again and is ready for this weekend’s race.
With Via Sistina stepping up to 2000m in the Ranvet Stakes (2000m), Fangirl is an early $3.10 favourite for the George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
The race will feature a strong field, including dual Group 1 winner Ceolwulf, All-Star Mile hero Tom Kitten, and Canterbury Stakes winner Royal Patronage.
