Revolina, a three-year-old filly, has demonstrated the same resilience that saw her survive a difficult birth, translating it into success on the racetrack.
Under the training of Richard and Will Freedman, the filly extended her perfect record to two wins from two starts with a powerful display of speed in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Her achievement in winning a black-type race at only her second career start is significant, especially considering the challenges she faced as a foal when born with breathing issues requiring urgent human assistance to survive.
“(Owner) Ricky (Surace) has told me a number of times she actually came out as a dummy foal and she was touch and go to even survive,” Will Freedman revealed. “To get her back through that stage, come here at her second start… don’t get me wrong, the pattern helped us, but she had the tactical speed to take advantage of the inside gate.”
Bred and owned by Surace’s B2B Thoroughbreds, which holds an entry for the $3 million Sunlight (1100m) at the Gold Coast in January, Revolina is emerging as the potential contender for the prestigious event.
Surace has long desired to have one of his own horses compete in the feature race, and Revolina is making a strong case to be that horse.
“The main goal has always been to get to the Sunlight at the Magic Millions, so we’ll devise a plan from there,” Freedman stated. “There may be another run in the spring, but she’s almost earned her way to having a break. B2B have their own slot, so they’ve been crying out to find a horse they can run in it. She’s doing really well.”
Revolina, starting at $11, controlled the race from the lead and maintained a comfortable advantage throughout, ultimately winning by 1-1/2 lengths from Punxsutawney Phil ($7), with Our Emperor ($8.50) finishing a short neck further back in third.
Jockey Tommy Berry commented that the three-year-old possesses considerable untapped potential and would benefit from being ridden with a sit in future races.
“I don’t think that is the way to ride her, leading, but we were handed the lead today,” Berry explained. “She still wanted to overdo things a little bit. I loved her tenacity late.”
