The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stable expect to see a fitter Generation step out for the second run of his campaign at The Valley.

Generation lines up in the Inglis 2022 Yearling Sales Series Plate (1200m) on Saturday after finishing third in his return run in the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 14.

After leading, Generation was run down by impressive Godolphin colt Ingratiating and was just touched out by General Beau on the line for second spot.

Eustace said the three-year-old son of Snitzel was underdone for the assignment, however the run was still full of merit.

“He had a really good blow after the race,” Eustace told RSN.

“He was a little bit soft, and he had to lead them up, but it was deceptive.

“Watching the race, it looked like he wasn’t going that quick down the side, but he ran very smart sectionals and rattled along down the side, and he felt the pinch a little bit late.

“He’s a winner over 1200 (metres) and on ground with cut in it as well.”

Generation only has two horses drawn outside him on Saturday, and Eustace said he did not know whether that would be a positive or a negative.

He said Jye Mcneil, who is reunited with the colt on Saturday, will have to make up his mind when the gates open whether to push forward or sit off the speed.

“He has shown gate speed before but it’s one of those draws where you have to leave it up to the jockey a little bit,” Eustace said.

“But it will be a difficult day to assess. You’ll have to see what the ground is like and how the track is playing.

“But the horse is in good form. He’s well above average and it’s a nice steppingstone for him hopefully.
