Flamboyer looking good for return

Hardened veteran Flamboyer has surprised even his trainer Kelly Doughty by how well he looks as he he heads into his 10th campaign at the Gold Coast.

The now seven-year-old Flamboyer has been a stalwart for Doughty and her husband and part-owner Gary.

The gelding can push his prize money past $600,000 if he wins his 10th race in Saturday’s Open Handicap (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Flamboyer is a noted wet track horse and Doughty is obviously hoping the rain about south east Queensland continues.

“At this stage of his career a wet track helps but I would expect him to run well no matter what the track,” Doughty said.

“I can’t remember him ever looking so well and he seems to enjoy being back in the stables.”

Flamboyer beat stakes-winning mare Sylpheed by 4-1/2 lengths in a Gold Coast trial two weeks ago.

“He did it pretty easily and has done well since. It was a nice trial against a handy field,” Doughty said.

Flamboyer has been sparingly raced on his home track at the Gold Coast but has missed a place only once in five starts on the circuit.

He has a liking for the Sunshine Coast and will head there on January 27 for the Caloundra Cup over 1400m.

His biggest win was in the Listed Glasshouse Sprint at the Sunshine Coast in 2016.
