The International Jockeys’ Challenge signals the true beginning of Hong Kong International Races week, and trainer Caspar Fownes looks well placed to strike early.

Across the four-race series, jockeys compete for HK$1 million (AU$193,000) in prize money for the top points scorer.

But if trainers were earning points, Fownes might already be in front with key chances in races four and five.

Last-start winner Corleone lines up in race five, again over the Happy Valley 1650m, with Ryan Moore to ride.

“After his impressive win last start I chose to wait for this race,” Fownes said.

“He’s up in the weights but his win was in good time – he ran 1:38.5 which is a solid time around the Valley.

“With the superstar Ryan aboard, that is a great result.”

Hong Kong analyst Jaike Altieri echoed the strength of the performance, noting Corleone’s above-average Class 4 rating and late strength.

Fownes also saddles Super Sixty in the previous race, partnered by Joao Moreira.

The five-year-old was unlucky last start over the 1000m and jumps from a wide gate.

“He was a bit unlucky last start… I decided to keep him fresh and target this race,” Fownes said.

Altieri noted Super Sixty posted a new peak rating in October and remains a strong hope.

Points from races four, five, seven and eight will decide the International Jockeys’ Challenge winner.
