Freedman, Berry land Rosehill double with Marhoona and Manaal

Michael Freedman and jockey Tommy Berry enjoyed a feature race double at Rosehill, with Marhoona taking out the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) before Manaal extended her winning streak in the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m).

Manaal added to her Sheraco Stakes victory earlier this month, confirming Freedman’s view that her patchy autumn was due to bad barriers rather than ability. “If she got the right run in a race she has still got plenty to give,” he said. The mare is being considered for either the Silver Eagle or The Invitation.

Earlier, Golden Slipper winner Marhoona ($3 fav) became the first since Fireburn (2022) to score again at three, digging deep to beat Akaysha ($4.60) by three-quarters of a length. Berry admitted relief at the filly defying the “Slipper curse” after past champions failed to train on.

Marhoona is expected to head to the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes before a tilt at the Group 1 Coolmore Classic.
