Freedman confident Tom Kitten can fire in King Charles III Stakes

It’s been a stop-start campaign for Tom Kitten, but co-trainer Sam Freedman believes the gelding is primed for a strong showing in Saturday’s Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1609m) at Randwick.

After being scratched at the barriers in the Memsie Stakes (1400m), Tom Kitten has since raced in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and Feehan Stakes (1600m), neither of which suited his pattern.

“He’s been good, he arrived up in Sydney on Sunday morning,” Freedman said.
“He worked strongly Tuesday morning, so he just needs a big field, a lot of tempo.
He should get that on Saturday, which is, I think, just what he’s been lacking.”

Freedman said the mixed tempo of his previous runs had hampered his preparation, but believes those experiences will leave him spot-on for Randwick.

Tom Kitten is rated a $21 chance behind favourite Fangirl, with the race run over 1609m — a distance slightly favouring younger horses under weight-for-age conditions.
