Trainer Mitchell Freedman will realise a lifelong ambition when Attrition lines up in Saturday’s Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

The six-year-old, a $34 outsider alongside Light Infantry Man, will take on a star field led by defending champion Via Sistina ($2.20).

“We always had it pencilled in that we would try and go to the race this year,” Freedman said. “It’s been a dream to have a runner in the race, and we’ve shared that dream with the owners.”

Attrition has been consistent this campaign, finishing second in the Hill Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill and third in the Feehan Stakes (1600m) at The Valley.

Freedman praised Kerrin McEvoy’s bold ride last start but is confident new jockey Craig Williams can give the gelding every chance.
“He deserves a crack at it,” Freedman said. “We’re really looking forward to the Cox Plate.”
