Michael Freedman is starting to figure out what works for import Givemethebeatboys and is hopeful of a strong showing at Scone.
The Group 1-placed horse, previously competing in Ireland, had his best Australian run last month, finishing third to Mazu in the Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.
Givemethebeatboys’ Australian campaign began with a solid debut in the Expressway Stakes (1200m), where he finished just under two lengths behind Magic Time. However, a disappointing unplaced effort followed in the Challenge Stakes (1000m), won by Jedibeel.
Freedman acknowledged the gear change was likely a factor in the poor performance and also noted that the firm tracks did not suit the horse.
“He only got beaten a couple of lengths by some very good horses,” Freedman said. “He didn’t really stretch out on a firm deck… the softer track last time was more to his liking.”
Givemethebeatboys hasn’t raced since April 19 but is in good shape for the Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) at Scone on Saturday. He will again wear visors as he steps up in distance.
