Freedmans chasing Premier’s Cup glory

Richard and Michael Freedman will saddle up two runners in the Premier’s Cup at Eagle Farm.

One is a seasoned campaigner, the other a progressive import and co-trainer Michael Freedman can make a case for both in the Premier’s Cup at Eagle Farm.

Tough-as-teak stayer Paths Of Glory, who boasts one of the hottest form references around, will clash with emerging stablemate Alakahan in Saturday’s 2400 metre race.

Paths Of Glory won the JRA Cup two starts ago, lowering the colours of Zaaki who has subsequently announced himself as one of Australia’s most promising weight-for-age gallopers with his slashing Doomben Cup triumph.

While Paths Of Glory finished fourth in the Wagga Cup at his next start, Michael Freedman said he was unlucky and had no doubt he could bounce back in Brisbane.

“He went to Wagga and was probably a little bit stiff there. It took him a while to wind up into it and then he got crowded up the straight,” he said.

“He’s probably racing in the best form of his career since he moved out here.

“He’s a pretty seasoned traveller. We sent him up (Wednesday) night to line him up there Saturday.

“He always gives his all so if he gets the right run, it’s a race he can run well in.”

Former Irish galloper Alakahan took time to acclimatise to Australia but now in his second preparation, he has started to blossom.

He has notched back-to-back 2400m wins at his past two starts on the Randwick Kensington track and at the Gold Coast to earn a shot at stakes grade.

“Saturday is a bit of a step up from his win the previous start at the Gold Coast but he’s doing well up there, his work has been good so, while it will be interesting to see how he handles that step up in grade, he is a progressive stayer,”Freedman said.
