Gangitano set to debut at Caulfield races

One of the better named racehorses is set to make his debut in a stakes race at Caulfield on Saturday.

Those across the Underbelly series on television would recognise the name Gangitano, an underworld figure who died during Melbourne’s gangland killings in the late 1990’s and 2000’s.

In the Underbelly series, Alphonse Gangitano was portrayed by actor Vince Colosimo, which is how Gangitano, the racehorse, gets his name, while the colt’s nickname around the Amy and Ash Yargi stable stable is Vincent.

A two-year-old colt by Written By from the Foxwedge mare Colosimo, Gangitano is set to make his debut in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) on Saturday.

Gangitano travelled from his Mornington base to Caulfield on Tuesday morning to get a look at the track ahead of his debut.

Ash Yargi said Gangitano had been professional in his work leading up to Saturday’s outing, without being fully pressed.

He said Gangitano was a laid-back individual that had impressed Craig Williams, who has the ride on Saturday, with the way he has gone about his work in his jump-outs.

“He (Williams) really likes the horse and is of the same opinion as us, he’ll make a nice later two-year-old, slash three-year-old, when the time comes,” Yargi said.

“He’s doing everything right at the moment, so there’s no reason why not to push for a race like the Merson Cooper and by doing that we will educate the horse going forward.

“He’s won his jump-outs, but he’s only done what he has had to do.

“Craig hasn’t asked him for much. He feels like a horse that is still learning and if he does ask him to finish off, he feels there will be something there.

“He’s not that one dimensional jump-and-run two-year-old, he’s got a bit of scope.

“Fingers crossed, there’s still a few days to the race, but hopefully he pulls up well from today.”
