Gary Portelli three-year-old in class drop at Randwick-Kensington

Exciting three-year-old Sky Command will drop back from stakes company to take her place in the TAB Handicap (1000m) at Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday.

The daughter of Deep Field got the attention of racing fans when a dominant all-the-way winner at Warwick Farm on debut.

The Gary Portelli-trained filly won her first two starts before finishing down the track in the Listed Rosebud at Randwick three weeks ago but pulled up with genuine excuses.

The Warwick Farm-based trainer said Sky Command was lucky to come out of the race as well as she did.

“She got galloped on last start but we were lucky she suffered no major injury, she just lost her legs from under her,” he said.

“I backed right off her and made sure there was no underlying issue there as she did stop quickly in the straight.

“But Brenton (Avdulla) said she would have run second or third if that didn’t happen.”

Sky Command is still in her first racing preparation and will take on the older horses for the first time on Wednesday.

The three-year-old is awkwardly drawn in barrier 11 but gets James Mcdonald in the saddle for her fourth race start.

Portelli is taking a patient approach with the daughter of Deep Field and hasn’t set any plans for the upcoming spring.

“We’re just regrouping with her and then we’ll see what happens on Wednesday,” he said.

“It is still only her first preparation.”

11 horses have accepted for the TAB Handicap on Wednesday, with last start winners Duchess and Oh Please Dianna among the acceptors.
