General Salute ready for another home track success

General Salute has predominantly competed in stakes races since his two-year-old season, and while it took him a while to achieve success at that level, he has now found his form.

The gelding, who has been placed seven times in black-type grade, broke his maiden in the 2025 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m). This year, he has added significant feature race victories in the Winter Stakes (1400m) and the Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m).

It has been a testament to patience and persistence for his connections, who maintained their belief in the horse despite his earlier struggles with foot issues.

“He’s had his issues over the years, but the owners are very patient, and they’ve always known he’s a quality galloper with his fair share of ability,” co-trainer Sterling Alexiou stated.

“There has never been any pressure on us to ever put any pressure on the horse.”

“We’ve let him slowly build through the grades. He’s up over the $1 million mark (in prizemoney) now, which is the bees’ knees for a homebred.”

General Salute is set to vie for another major race win in Saturday’s Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill, having secured a third-place finish in the same event twelve months prior.

Last year’s top two finishers, Headley Grange and Gringotts, will be among his competitors, as will the experienced Private Eye and the promising Linebacker.

Alexiou acknowledges the competitive nature of the field but is optimistic about General Salute’s chances from barrier four, especially after his recent win on a firmer track.

“It was his first win on a good track the other day, so it was good to see him tick that box,” he commented.

“It looks a hot sort of race. He’ll have to go to another level, but he’s draw well, and I imagine he’ll get a good run in the race.”

“He knows nothing but to give his all and he’s a horse who fills you with a fair bit of confidence that when things go right, he always shows up.”

As of Thursday, the Victorian-trained Sepals was the $5 favourite for the Alan Brown Stakes, with General Salute considered a leading contender at $9.50.

Scratchings include Lady Shenandoah and Warnie, both of whom are scheduled to compete in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield.
