Gerald Ryan monitors Sydney forecast for Arctic Glamour ahead of Guy Walter Stakes

Trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou are anxiously eyeing the Sydney weather forecast due to Arctic Glamour’s dislike for damp tracks before her planned comeback in the Guy Walter Stakes at Randwick.

The five-year-old mare has failed to secure a victory in six attempts on soft going, so to avoid squandering an outing, Ryan indicates they would switch to an alternative strategy should Randwick be rain-soaked on race day.

“We will know on Saturday morning at 7.30 (AEDT),” Ryan said.

“If she doesn’t run Saturday, she will go to Newcastle. But she won’t be running on rain-affected ground.”

The backup choice is the Newcastle Stakes (1400m) at the Hunter venue on March 6, though Ryan prefers the conditions locally to allow Arctic Glamour to launch her campaign in the Guy Walter Stakes (1400m).

This mare performs strongly fresh, having captured the Hot Danish Stakes (1400m) upon her return last spring, and Ryan believes her current form matches that peak entering this campaign.

“As good as ever. Her fresh record is great, she’s had seven goes for two wins, a second and a third, and there was one race first-up at Randwick you could just put a line through,” Ryan said.

“Her first trial was good. She probably ran out of a bit of puff.

Then the other day we went back and rode her quiet and she hit the line really well – I didn’t want her to have a hard trial, I wanted her to run home for 300 or 400 metres, and she did that really well.”

Tom Sherry picks up the mount on Arctic Glamour from gate four, and a promising comeback effort might propel her toward the Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill, her home course, two weeks later.
