The Ben, Will and J D Hayes team at Lindsay Park felt let down when their pair of fillies failed to secure spots in the Golden Slipper at Rosehill.
Medicinal and Gin Twist were listed as the second and third emergencies for the nation’s top two-year-old event.
Ben Hayes expressed regret that neither filly gained entry, given there were no withdrawals from the 16 juveniles in last Saturday’s Group 1 feature.
“It’s a shame we didn’t get in,” Hayes said.
“You win a Stakes race, and you normally get in, but this year it was just so open.
“They were taking their turns in winning and with the prize money so strong in New South Wales, we ended up just missing out.”
As the third emergency for the Golden Slipper, the Hayes stable opted to retain Gin Twist in Melbourne.
Having triumphed along the Flemington straight on February 28, Gin Twist heads back there this Saturday for the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m).
This comes after a recent straightforward jump-out at Flemington where she placed third in an 800m heat.
“We made the decision to not even send her up,” Hayes said.
“It didn’t look like she was any chance of getting a run, so we took the opportunity of giving her a jump-out at home instead.”
Gin Twist, by Golden Slipper victor Home Affairs, shone when taking out a Listed contest over 1000m down the straight on February 28.
“She’s had that experience down the straight and hopefully that will hold her in good stead on Saturday,” Hayes said.
While Gin Twist remained in Melbourne, Medicinal travelled to Sydney hoping for a surprise slot in the Golden Slipper.
Hayes noted the filly is set for a trial in Sydney ahead of the Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 11.
