Andrew Gluyas has opted against a richer Melbourne target for Guru Warrior, instead keeping the promising but quirky gelding in Adelaide for another learning run at Morphettville Parks on Saturday.
Guru Warrior has put together three straight wins this campaign, though his habit of laying out late has created anxious moments for connections. It’s one reason Gluyas believes the four-year-old isn’t ready for Victorian stakes company just yet.
“His winning but he’s got a few little foibles there that we’re trying to work through,” Gluyas said.
The son of Saxon Warrior will again start a short-priced favourite in the benchmark 78 handicap over 2250 metres, and Gluyas hopes gear changes — including visors and a lugging bit — help him stay straight under jockey Jason Holder.
“Hopefully with the little tinker of the gear we can get him to run straight on Saturday,” he said.
“Hopefully the visors can just give him that little bit of help that he needs at the right time… he’s just not quite ready for (Melbourne). We just need to season him that little bit more before we tackle any bigger races.”
