Gold Spirit qualifies for simpler contests compared to the event he faces at Morphettville this Saturday, however trainer Grant Kluske spots benefits in elevating the developing sprinter to a superior class.
The four-year-old gears up for his second appearance this campaign in the $55,000 Sportsbet Same Race Multi BM72 Handicap covering 1000 metres on the Parks track.
Gold Spirit had entry into the 0-62 race, run over 1000m right after the BM72, yet Kluske favours the conditions for his runner even with the second widest starting position among the 10 competitors.
“I decided to go with the higher-class race mainly because the horses in it,” Kluske said.
“He likes it up forward, but I think it’s going to be a bit of a fight up front and will take a sit.
“He doesn’t have to be up there (leading), so I’m more than happy going into it.”
In the later race, Gold Spirit would have shouldered equal top weight, whereas here he enters the BM72 carrying 54kg thanks to a 3kg allowance for Brooke King.
King partnered the Turffontein gelding when he placed fourth on debut this prep at Morphettville on January 31, missing by just over a length.
That effort came in 0-70 company, but featuring 68-rated horses Been Our Angel, Mintulee and Nextonixs as the highest assessed in this weekend’s contest, Kluske views it as less formidable than possible and plans to gauge future paths from the result.
“This will only be his second start this time in, but he’s got to step up the mark in this one,” Kluske said.
“It’s a benchmark 72, but there’s nothing in it rated 69 (or above), so we’re more than happy.
“He’s a very good horse, very professional in everything he does and I’m feeling really happy with him.”
