Group One stars head Doomben 10,000 noms

Group One-winning stars Redzel, Impending, English and In Her Time head a near record 34 nominations for the Doomben 10,000.

Entries for the Group One races during the Brisbane winter carnival closed on Tuesday morning with large numbers in all.

The Doomben 10,000 nominations are the largest since the race switched to a weight-for-age event in 1997.

Redzel, who won the Doomben 10,000 and the inaugural Everest last year, heads 11 nominations from NSW.

Leading Victorian trainer Darren Wet has the largest number of overall nominations with seven for the 1200m-sprint on May 12.

Queensland’s top sprinters Most Important, Monsieur Gustave and Houtzen head the local numbers.

The Doomben Cup has 36 nominations, also a high for recent years, with the Weir-trained Group One star Gailo Chop the leading contender.

There are only two Queensland horses, Man Of His Word and All In Vogue, nominated for the Cup on May 19.

There were 60 nominations for the Group One Kingsford Smith Cup and 77 for the Group One Queensland Oaks on May 26.

The $1.5 million Stradbroke has 119 nominations, the Queensland Derby for three-year-olds 121 and the J J Atkins for two-year-olds 127.

Those three Group One races will be run at Doomben on June 9.

Nominations for the final Group One race of the carnival, the Tatts Tiara on June 23, close next month.
