Half Yours primed to bloom in Melbourne Cup for McEvoys

Everything has come up roses for Half Yours since Tony and Calvin McEvoy bought him, and the father-and-son team are hoping the good fortune continues into Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.

The five-year-old gelding, to be ridden by Jamie Melham, drew barrier eight and remains favourite for the $10 million feature.

After claiming the Caulfield Cup last month, rain forecast for Cup day also works in his favour.

“Things are just falling into place beautifully,” Tony McEvoy said. “You need momentum and we’ve got the momentum at the moment.”

Bought for $305,000 from Colin McKenna’s dispersal sale last year, Half Yours has quickly risen through the grades, winning the Caloundra Cup and Naturalism Stakes before his Caulfield triumph.

McEvoy said the success proves his stable can train stayers, adding, “I’m hoping this will open a few doors and get us more runners in these big races, year on year.”
