Heavy rain threatens to dampen Randwick meeting

It will be a nervous 48 hours for Sydney racing officials as they continue to monitor weather and track conditions ahead of the Silver Eagle program at Randwick.

More than 60mm of rain has fallen at Randwick this week, half of that in the 24-hour period to Thursday morning when the track was officially declared a heavy 10.

The rain didn’t let up as the day progressed but with the forecast for Saturday reasonably good, Racing NSW chief steward Marc Van Gestel is staying upbeat.

“We’re monitoring it and hopeful that we don’t get the top end of the scale that they’re talking about,” Van Gestel said.

“The forecast for the early part of Saturday is not terrible, it’s only for a couple of mils on race morning so if we get that, we’re reasonably confident we will be able to proceed.

“It’s just a matter of what comes between now and then.”

Ten races are scheduled for Randwick on Saturday, several of them important lead-up events including the $1 million Silver Eagle (1300m), a key launchpad into the $10 million Golden Eagle and the Gloaming Stakes (1800m), which has traditionally been an important Spring Champion Stakes pointer.

The Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) is likewise critical for the three-year-old sprinters hoping to earn a trip to Melbourne for the Coolmore Stud Stakes, while several mares are hoping to stake their claims for a start in The Invitation via Saturday’s The Nivison (1200m).

The provincial meeting set down for Kembla Grange on Saturday has already been moved to Scone after Kembla was deemed unsuitable for racing following more than 110mm of rain this week.

The Hunter has missed the worst of the downfalls so far with Scone rated a soft 6 on Thursday.
