Wet weather could be the winning ingredient for Welwal as he prepares for the Winter Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.
Now five runs into his Australian stint, the former French galloper is thriving under Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr—particularly when the track is rain-affected.
He delivered a first-up win for the stable on a heavy surface in the Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield last spring.
“We have been hanging out for a heavy track for this horse,” Kent Jnr said.
After two quiet runs to start this campaign, Welwal flashed home for second in the Civic Stakes (1400m) last time out.
With a smaller field and more suitable conditions this Saturday, the stable is upbeat.
“He has a nice middle draw… I know he’s got a lot of weight but he is a class horse and he seemingly loves heavy going,” Kent Jnr said.
Stablemate Grand Impact has been scratched and will run in the Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) instead.
