Irish-bred import Hosier remains unbeaten in Australia

The Lloyd and Nick Williams-owned Irish-bred import George Hosier remains unbeaten in Australia after recording an all-the-way win at Sandown.

After successive victories at Bendigo, Hosier stepped up to 1800m to claim the Ladbroke It! Handicap on Wednesday.

But don’t expect to see son of Camelot being a major player during the spring with expectations being the gelding will have one more run, possibly next month, before a spell.

As he did in his two Bendigo victories, Hosier was taken to the front and dictated the race at his leisure.

Ridden by Ben Melham, Hosier, the $1.50 favourite, sprinted clear on turning for home to record a 3-¾ length win from Excelleration ($7.50) with Pres De Toi ($21) 1-¾ lengths away third.

Melham rode the Robert Hickmott -trained four-year-old in the second of the gelding’s Bendigo victories and said he felt improvement from Hosier on Wednesday.

“He has taken improvement from each run that he has had,” Melham said.

“He’s been well handled and well-placed and he’s learning each time he goes to the races.”

Melham was mindful of the wind that had increased its intensity during the day that was into Hosier’s face racing into down the back straight.

He said he was not looking for a leader and was content to creep across the field to find the front.

“I was mindful of having him in a good rhythm,” Melham said.

“He did that and once he got to the top of the hill, he pricked his ears.

“He conserves his energy through the run and he gets to the 600 (metres) and quickens like a good horse.

“He has a bit of class and he showed that today. He was too classy for them.”
