Still riding the high of a lucrative Gold Coast win, Peter and Will Hulbert are hoping momentum carries into Ipswich on Wednesday.
The father-and-son training partnership scored their biggest result together when Sir Carter claimed the Magic Millions Country Cup (1200m) last Saturday.
Attention now turns to consistent maiden Cambridge Bay, who looks close to a deserved breakthrough.
The four-year-old has finished third at all three career starts and remains very much a work in progress.
“Arguably you could have said that he should have won each of those races so far but he kept drawing poorly and we had to keep going back in the run,” Will said.
“He’s drawn a little sticky again in barrier nine but he’s had a trial and a jump out and they’ve been good enough to suggest he’s improved.
“We are expecting a forward showing tomorrow and the 1350m start is fair there so if he can be midfield or somewhere one-pair back and get cover one off the fence then he should be hard to beat.”
Form out of his races has stood up well to date.
By Merchant Navy, Cambridge Bay has required patience as he strengthened.
“In another 12 months he’ll be winning more for his owners.”
Cambridge Bay is rated a $3.40 chance.
