Geraldine’s Jewel chasing city win

Geraldine’s Jewel will return to the track where she won on debut in a bid to stretch her latest campaign to four straight wins.

The now six-year-old runs in the Fierce Impact – Made For You Mare at Sandown on Wednesday in a bid to remain unbeaten for her latest trainer Maddie Raymond.

After starting out with Mark Ashby, Geraldine’s Jewel had one start for Luke Oliver before spending 18 months away from the track.

Geraldine’s Jewel started her career with a debut win at Sandown as a $61 chance in March 2019, but in her next 11 starts for Ashby she finished out of the placings on 10 occasions while her lone start for Oliver was a second at Cranbourne.

Raymond has been careful in her placing of Geraldine’s Jewel, keeping her to the country scene where she has been successful at Casterton, Donald and Coleraine.

While the company may not have been strong, Geraldine’s Jewel has accomplished each task with a decent weight.

Raymond said the mare will appreciate the small weight drop on Wednesday in which she will be ridden by Jake Duffy who has been aboard the mare in her three runs this campaign.

“She hasn’t been in the strongest races, but all you can do is go there and win,” Raymond said.

“She has gone up in the weights each run and handled it well. It is a bit of a jump up in grade, but she’s well in at the weights.”

Following heavy rain on Monday, the Sandown track was into the Heavy range ahead of Wednesday’s meeting which Raymond expects will aid Geraldine’s Jewel.

“I think she’s better on that softer track,” Raymond said.

“Her last runs have been on that little firmer footing. Her best win for me was in the at Casterton (first-up) which was a soft track, so she’ll definitely get that at Sandown.

“She’s drawn a bit awkward, but I think she’s better off ridden a little bit quieter anyway.”
