Inexorable suited by trip at Caulfield

A restricted race for VOBIS Silver horses at Caulfield attracted the attention of trainer Grahame Begg after the promising debut of Inexorable.

Begg set his sights on the VOBIS Gold Ingot (1400m) on Saturday after Inexorable ran home gamely when second on the Ballarat synthetic track over 1100m on June 27.

Inexorable chased home Piastri who goes around earlier on Saturday’s program in the Quayclean Handicap (1200m).

“Piastri was very well backed on the day,” Begg said.

“I think he wore blinkers that day. Inexorable drew wide and got back, so we just looked after him a bit and he hit the line really well.

“We then spotted this race over 1400 metres.

“He’s by Dandino out of a Savabeel mare, so you’d think he’d be well suited over further, but he looks a little sharper than that.”

Saturday’s field has attracted nine runners and with the exception of the Peter Moody-trained Mollynickers, the remaining runners are all maidens.

Begg said he was a little surprised that with $175,000 prize money on offer, the race did not attract a larger field.

“After having the Byerley last week (at Flemington) and this race being VOBIS Silver, it cuts a lot of horses out of the equation,” Begg said.

“So, it looked a nice race for him and he’s a nice, progressive horse.

“He had a jump-out the other week on an absolute swamp, and we didn’t let go of his head.

“He was on the outside fence, so he’ll be much better on the drier surface on Saturday.”

Begg will also saddle Scantoon in the Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap (1600m) who will also appreciate getting onto a better surface on Saturday with a weight drop after the claim for Celine Gaudray.

“He had a very long time off and often you see it takes more time than normal to get back into racing mode,” Begg said.

“Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how much work you do at home with them, jump-outs and all that, it all comes back to race day.

“After his last run he had a big blow, which took me a little by surprise, but he should be right on Saturday.”
