Irish jockey Adam Farragher secures first stakes win in W J McKell Cup

Irish jockey Adam Farragher has achieved a significant career milestone, clinching his inaugural stakes race victory aboard the Ciaron Maher-trained Glory Daze in the Listed W J McKell Cup at Rosehill.

Farragher had previously secured seven black-type placings, including a Group 2 finish in the UK, but expressed his immense satisfaction at finally landing a Listed win on Saturday.

“I didn’t get too many chances back home in these sort of races. They were few and far between,” Farragher declared. “I’m really delighted. It has been a long time coming.”

Having previously ridden for William Haggas overseas and accompanying Dubai Honour during one of its Sydney carnival campaigns, Farragher connected with Maher through a mutual acquaintance. He accepted the champion horseman’s invitation to relocate to Australia late last year.

Jo Gerard-Dubord, assistant trainer for Maher, was present to witness Farragher’s career-defining moment and commended his dedication, stating it was a well-earned triumph.

“It’s good for Adam. He’s a hard worker, and he doesn’t get many opportunities,” Gerard-Dubord remarked. “He has been here for a bit now and he has ridden a few good winners for us, and he rode him perfectly.”

Gerard-Dubord disclosed that the McKell Cup represented a crucial juncture for Glory Daze, who had underperformed throughout the current season and faced potential retirement if a return to form wasn’t evident at Rosehill.

“He’s had a bit of racing and he’s not getting any younger,” Gerard-Dubord added. “He’s had his issues in the past, so when they lose form like that it’s usually hard to get them back. But off the back of that, there are a few more runs left in him.”

Glory Daze ($31, according to leading Aussie betting sites) was expertly guided by Farragher from the front, demonstrating resilience when challenged in the home straight to hold off Tavros ($12) by a length. God’s Window ($2.70 favourite) secured third place, a further half-neck behind.
