Jamie Kah stressed over trip to Brisbane

Jamie Kah has fulfilled her obligations at Sandown in her chase for 100 winners as rival jockeys made an early trip to Brisbane.

The latest outbreak of COVID-19 in Melbourne has seen a number of Melbourne jockeys hightail it to Brisbane early for the Queensland Derby meeting.

But one that remained for the meeting at Sandown on Wednesday was Jamie Kah who is trying to become the first jockey to crack the 100-win mark in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

After guiding Kurabui, the $1.60 favourite to victory in the Ladbrokes Blended Multi Handicap (1600m), Kah has moved to 89 wins for the season, 11 shy of becoming the first to achieve the mark.

While John Allen, Ben Allen, Jye McNeil and Craig Williams forfeited rides at Sandown, Kah was determined to fulfill her obligations although she admitted to being “stressed” by the decision.

Kah was booked to fly to Brisbane on Wednesday night where her rides at Eagle Farm on Saturday include Horrifying in the Derby and the unbeaten Ayrton in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic.

“It stressed me out this morning for sure as I really wanted to ride today,” Kah said.

“There’s not that many meetings left, so I wanted to be here as I chase the 100.

“It’s a bit unknown what’s going to happen, but I’m going to get on a flight tonight and hopefully there’s no dramas up there.

“Obviously, we’ll be able to get back into Melbourne and I was going to ride in Melbourne next weekend anyway, so I’ll be going backwards and forwards.”

With the season ending on July 31, there are 16 metropolitan meetings remaining.

Kah will return for the Sandown meeting next Wednesday and the Flemington meeting on June 5 with plans to return to Brisbane for the Stradbroke meeting at Eagle Farm the following weekend.

Mark Zahra will tempt his luck by flying to Brisbane later in week after his wife Elyse gave birth to a daughter last weekend.
