Jockey Jamie Melham has been unsuccessful in her attempt to have a careless riding suspension overturned, meaning she will miss the prestigious Derby Day meeting at Flemington this Saturday.
Melham, who achieved significant success last year by winning both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups aboard Half Yours, was scheduled to pilot the promising Sydney filly Satono Glow in the Group 1 $2 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
The trainers of Satono Glow, John O’Shea and Tom Charlton, had prepared for this possibility by having Melham’s husband, Ben, on standby. He will now take the reins for the filly in the important sprint race.
The suspension Melham is appealing is a four-meeting ban for careless riding, incurred during the Group 2 Sydney Stakes on Everest Day when partnering Mahroona to a second-place finish behind Grafterburners.
Racing NSW stewards had brought the charge of careless riding against Melham after determining that she had impeded Coal Crusher at the 300-metre mark. This action resulted in “Coal Crusher being crowded onto Generosity and losing its rightful running.”.
Satono Glow, with an impressive record of four wins from five starts, is currently listed as the $4 second favourite for the Coolmore Stud Stakes, trailing only The Next Episode, who is priced at $3.
The filly possesses valuable experience on the Flemington straight course, having secured victories in both her previous starts there. She won the Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes in March and the Cap D’Antibes Stakes last month, both times under Melham’s guidance.
Satono Glow enters the Coolmore Stud Stakes following a dominant performance in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes at Rosehill on October 10, where she significantly outperformed her rivals.
Melham’s four-meeting suspension is set to conclude after the Derby Day races, making her eligible to ride again on Melbourne Cup Day next week.
