Trainer Ciaron Maher is sending out a call for British jockey Jamie Spencer to ride Light Infantry Man at Caulfield.

The gelding Light Infantry Man is scheduled to compete in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) this Saturday, and Maher has contacted Spencer regarding his potential to take the mount on the gelding.

In the United Kingdom, Spencer served as the primary jockey for Light Infantry Man and traveled to Australia to ride the gelding in the Golden Eagle at Rosehill back in 2022.

Following the Golden Eagle, Light Infantry Man went back to the UK, where Spencer maintained his connection with the gelding until its return to Australia for the 2023 King Charles III Stakes at Randwick.

On that day, Zac Purton was aboard, while since arriving in Australia, the gelding has also been ridden by Jason Collett, Craig Williams, Mark Zahra, John Allen, Blake Shinn, James McDonald, Chad Schofield, and Ethan Brown.

Among Australian-based jockeys, only McDonald and Brown have secured victories on Light Infantry Man, with Brown triumphant twice at Group 1 level on the gelding, notably in last year’s Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington.

As Brown and Zahra are out due to suspensions and McDonald is committed to Sydney rides over the weekend, Maher explained that he reached out to Spencer to check his availability.

“Ethan Brown’s suspended, Mark Zahra’s suspended, so I was talking to Jamie Spencer,” Maher said.

“I’ve still got to confirm that, but he knows the horse quite well.

“He rode the horse out here in the Golden Eagle and in a lot of Group 1 races in Europe, so it would be good if he came out, but we just need to firm that up.

“He is a quirky horse, and Ethan obviously gets on very well with him.

“He came through his first-up run in great order. He’s feeling great and doing everything right.

“It looks a nice race for him at weight-for-age over the 1800 metres.”
