Whether black-type success arrives this campaign or later, Gavin Bedggood believes Jenni The Ninja has the talent to take that next step.

The Shalaa filly made it two wins from as many starts with a strong victory in the Jockey Celebration Sprint Handicap (1100m) at Flemington on Saturday.

Ridden by Beau Mertens, Jenni The Ninja started a bookies $5.50 chance and had to wait for clear running in the straight.

She tracked the $3.90 favourite Military Tycoon before producing a sharp burst once into the clear, scoring by a length from Conscience.

Bedggood said the preparation had been far from straightforward following her maiden win at Pakenham in late November.

“I was keen to run her in a three-year-old benchmark 64 at Cranbourne a fortnight after Pakenham and Tony (Ottobre, owner) said we’d put her out,” Bedggood said.

“She had a fortnight at the paddock and he rang me up and said we’re going to send her back.

“She came back with obviously good residual fitness.”

After accounting for Military Tycoon and Esha, a recent Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) runner, Jenni The Ninja appears on a clear path toward stakes company.
