Jewel Bandit may still be learning her craft, but the filly kept her perfect record intact with a second win from as many starts at Geelong.
Jockey Michael Dee described the daughter of Pierata as “still a bit green” after she took out the Brandt Colac Handicap (1100m).
Jewel Bandit had broken through on debut at Cranbourne over 1000 metres on December 12 with Brad Rawiller aboard.
Dee took over the ride at Geelong and made full use of barrier one to secure the ideal run.
Purchased for just $20,000 at the 2024 Adelaide Magic Millions Sale, the filly has now earned close to five times her purchase price.
Sent out at $41, Jewel Bandit prevailed by a short neck over the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Frostnip, with Job Done a length away in third.
“Twenty ‘grand’, it just goes to show, dreams come true,” co-trainer Mark Kavanagh said.
“(He was) $21 at Cranbourne, but he won like he should have been favourite and I was quite surprised where the market had this horse today and it was proved wrong,” Dee said.
“We had barrier one, so obviously we’re going to use the gate. We jumped very clean and I anticipated Faraway Dream to lead and they ended up outside later and (we) ended up behind the one that we wanted to follow, eventually, so it worked out perfect.”
Race favourite Miss Ole finished sixth, five lengths from the winner.
