Jigsaw sprints clear to land emotional Meteorite victory at Cranbourne

Local sprinter Jigsaw has delivered a stirring win in the second running of The Meteorite, leading throughout to claim the $1 million Cranbourne slot race for trainer Cindy Alderson.

Racing for the Moonee Valley Racing Club’s slot after his McEwen Stakes victory on Cox Plate Day, Jigsaw ($6) controlled the tempo under apprentice Logan Bates and held off Arkansaw Kid ($6.50) by three-quarters of a length, with Zou Sensation ($6.50) third.

Alderson had three generations of her family on course, making the result especially meaningful.

“I can’t really believe it to be honest, especially with everyone around me today,” Alderson said. “Logan is like family to me… it’s a really proud moment.”

Jigsaw has now reeled off three straight wins since returning from a lengthy spell, a break Alderson credits for his resurgence.

“He’s enjoying himself, he’s got his confidence right up and he and Logan are the new combination,” she said.

He will not be aimed at the upcoming Supernova, with Alderson confirming 1400 metres is beyond his preferred range.

Bates said Jigsaw’s ability to accelerate around the bend was again decisive.

“He has an unbelievable gallop around the corner and that’s where he breaks them open,” Bates said.
