Jimmysstar locked in for The Everest as Maher eyes repeat glory

All Aged Stakes winner Jimmysstar has become the fourth confirmed runner for the $20 million The Everest (1200m), securing the TAB slot.

Trained by Ciaron Maher, Jimmysstar joins Ka Ying Rising, T J Smith Stakes champ Briasa, and rising sprinter Private Harry in the elite field.

Jimmysstar announced himself with an Oakleigh Plate win and confirmed his class with a Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) triumph in April.

Maher, who won last year’s Everest with Bella Nipotina for TAB, is optimistic.

“Hopefully we can repeat the process,” he told The Big Sports Breakfast.

The plan is to resume in The Shorts (1100m) on September 20 and trial in between.

Maher admits Hong Kong star Ka Ying Rising is the benchmark.

“He’s a world-class horse… but he’s got to travel over and everything has to go well.”

Meanwhile, Maher’s trio Light Infantry Man, Another Wil and Gringotts trialled at Gosford and are being aimed at spring features including the Cox Plate.
