At five years old, Joliestar remains at the peak of her abilities, with trainer Chris Waller pointing to her reliability as proof.
The mare is chasing a third straight victory in Saturday’s T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick, something she has never achieved in one preparation.
Although she has competed strongly from her three-year-old days, maintaining form across a full campaign has eluded her previously – not anymore.
“I can’t fault her. She is two from two this ‘prep’, and she is a confident lady who is taking the next step with consistency,” Waller said.
“You just see that with more mature horses. That’s the difference between your five-year-olds and your four-year-olds.
“Your four-year-olds still do a few little things wrong, but the five-year-olds, they know what they’re doing. They can race themselves.”
Returning with a resolute triumph against later Newmarket Handicap winner Caballus in the Expressway Stakes (1200m), Joliestar followed up by securing the Canterbury Stakes (1300m).
Entering the T J Smith Stakes with nearly a month since her last start, a spacing that has suited her historically.
Waller is careful to preserve some energy past the Sydney autumn carnival, as Joliestar is set for a stint in England at the onset of their summer.
This includes a one-week break post-Saturday before travelling to the trainer’s Melbourne headquarters for workouts and trials at Flemington to mimic straight tracks abroad.
However, Waller’s primary attention is the T J Smith Stakes, where Joliestar sits third in early markets at $4.40, trailing only three-year-old Tentyris ($3 favourite) and Jimmysstar ($4).
Tentyris aims to be the first of his age to defeat the seasoned sprinters since Trapeze Artist in 2018.
