John Thompson-trained filly Kibosh has made it three wins from her past four starts by delivering as odds-on favourite at Warwick Farm on Monday.
The daughter of So You Think faced her stiffest test to date at Warwick Farm on Monday, contesting the China Horse Club 3&4YO Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m).
In her first attempt at the mile and maiden outing at metropolitan level, Kibosh led throughout for a three quarter length success over the Matthew Dunn-trained Duchess Adele.
“She got a little bit keen midrace and was challenged around the corner so there were a couple of little worrying things but she is just a lovely mare and gives you 110%,” winning trainer John P Thompson said.
“In the past she has been challenged in races and she really lifts and she did today, she really fought well.”
While the effort Kibosh displays is a strong point for the filly, Thompson post race suggested this wasn’t her best asset, instead giving that accolade to her owners, the Pemberton family.
“Garry and Tony Pemberton are great supporters of my stable,” Thompson said.
“They let you do your job and it allows us to bring horses like this through their grades, give them a bit of confidence and take them where they need to go.”
Thompson has to date allowed Kibosh to gradually progress through her grades with Monday’s victory coming after victories at country and provincial level so far this preparation.
“She is a progressive mare by So You Think and you’d think she would only get better over more ground,” Thompson said.
“She’s done well between runs going into this. We’ll see how she pulls up from this run and go from there.”
The win also provided the second leg of a race to race double for apprentice Reece Jones who claimed the prior event on the card aboard the Gary Portelli-trained The Empire.
Jones was denied a metropolitan hat-trick at Warwick Farm as while past the post first aboard Admit It in Race 2, the XXXX Benchmark 72 Handicap (2400m), the gelding was disqualified with Jones weighing in 1.4kg light.
It was discovered a lead bag had failed to be added to Admit It’s saddle pre-race with the victory instead awarded to the Garry White-trained stayer Brown Thomas.
