Kylie Gavenlock hoping Cream Rises to the top

Undefeated three-year-old Cream Rises will have his first look at metropolitan company on Saturday in the Benchmark 72 (three-year-old, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.

The son of Fastnet Rock broke his maiden in easily, winning by 4.85 lengths, before backing it up with a 1.82 length win at Wyong last start.

With his benchmark rating now beginning to soar, Gosford based Kylie Gavenlock believes this is a step in the right direction for her progressive galloper.

“He’s up at a benchmark now, where he’d probably be carrying the grandstand if he stays in the provincials,” she said.

“So we’ll give him a chance, it’s a benchmark 72, only a three-year-old race so it seems like a nice step to the next step.

“I think he’ll really appreciate a bigger track. I just hope the rain holds off a bit. I don’t think he’s as good on a heavy track as he is on a soft or on top of the ground.

“I think next time in too he’ll get over a bit more ground.”

Gavenlock strikes at a very good 10% win and 30% place to runners’ ratio, and Cream Rises is only boosting that strike rate.

The son of Fastnet Rock is only two starts into his career, with the experience of racing going to be beneficial for the three-year-old who Gavenlock admits isn’t the brightest spark.

It didn’t take long for him to show his class though, with Gavenlock knowing the ability of the gelding right from the beginning.

“From the first time I galloped him (I knew he was good),” she said.

“Whilst he went very well, he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed and he hadn’t put it all together. But what he did, he did on raw ability.

“I knew it was just a matter of giving him some time so that he could put it all together.”
