Larimer Street set to strike in Millennium

Some good luck has finally fallen the way of Larimer Street in the $2 million Inglis Millennium at Warwick Farm with the two-year-old drawing the inside gate.

After a delayed trip from Sydney, the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained colt had his final gallop for Saturday’s 1100m race on a heavy track at Warwick Farm on Tuesday.

Further rain is forecast for the weekend which does not fill Young with confidence, but she knows the two-year-old could not be in any better order.

“We would normally go up on Saturday night but because of the heat up in Sydney we left on Sunday night,” Young said.

“He travelled up really well and galloped over 800 metres with Hugh Bowman on who has the ride on Saturday.

“There’s going to be another 30 mills on Friday and Cellsabeel, who won on a heavy last start and with the two kilos less, is going to be the one to beat.

“Our horse got through it fine according to Bowman, but under race conditions it might be different.

“But we’ve drawn one and if he handles the track I think he’ll be a really nice chance.”

Larimer Street has raced once, finishing second to Mr Cashman at The Valley on December 28 after striking early trouble.

Young said Larimer Street was forced backwards when Michael Poy fell early in the race, then made a mid-race move to sit outside the leader.

“I thought he boxed on pretty well to finish second considering the circumstances and he’s certainly come on from that,” Young said.

While a wet track is some concern, Young has no worries about Larimer Street racing right-handed.

She said the Cranbourne training facility allowed work in the reverse direction every Wednesday and Friday.

“Twice a week he canters around and we actually galloped him that way before his first trial and he got on his right leg and did everything correct, so I don’t think it will really worry him,” Young said.

“It’s just the track conditions, but it’s a $2 million race, so you have to have a go.”
