A decade after guiding Winx to a Phar Lap Stakes victory, jockey Tommy Berry triumphed again in the Group 2 race, this time aboard Lazzura, who added to Chris Waller’s remarkable record in the event at Rosehill.

Scratched from the G1 Coolmore Classic to contest the Phar Lap (1500m) for three-year-olds, Lazzura ($4) settled outside the leader and powered home to defeat Wonder Boy ($5) by 1-3/4 lengths, with stablemate Declichy Boulevard ($2.35 favourite) finishing third.

Waller secured his eighth Phar Lap Stakes win in the last 11 years, with all victories coming from fillies. This includes previous champions such as Winx (2015), Foxplay (2017), and Verry Elleegant (2019).

Lazzura, who had faced tough competition in her previous starts, claimed her first Group-race victory after finishing behind quality fillies earlier in the campaign.

Berry reflected on his past win with Winx, saying, “When Lady Shenandoah was scratched, I knew this was her race.”

Waller noted that Berry’s tactics of sitting outside the leader helped take luck out of the equation, and the race turned into a sit-and-sprint affair. He also mentioned the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at Randwick next month as a potential target.

Waller sees the Phar Lap Stakes as a key stepping stone for horses, adding that it gave Lazzura the confidence to “go out there and do it herself.”
