The passing of legendary trainer Harrison at 94 has left an indelible mark on the racing world. A true horseman, he is remembered for shaping stars like Asian Beau and Fait Accompli, with his Hall of Fame induction last August capping off a storied career.

Inspired by his uncle Paddy Mulcahy, an amateur rider, Harrison developed a deep love for horses. “They have so much personality. If they realise that you’re kind to them, they are all prepared to do their very best for you,” he said before his induction.

Harrison’s journey included triumphs in show riding and a brief stint in harness racing before he switched to thoroughbreds. His greatest success came with Fait Accompli, whom he helped transform from an inconsistent horse into a Perth Cup winner after painstaking work on his gait. “Horses are beautiful animals who want to please you,” Harrison said of his work with the gelding.

Harrison also guided Asian Beau to become a state racing icon, winning the 1979 “triple crown” of the Winterbottom Stakes, Lee-Steere Stakes, and Railway Stakes. His bond with owners Joe Williams and his deep affection for the horse made their success even more special.

Reflecting on his career, Harrison emphasized the importance of friendships formed along the way, especially with former riders. “The friendships are all about personalities and they mean everything now,” he said.

His passing leaves a void, but his legacy lives on in the horses he shaped and the people he inspired.
